Nikon NEF edited in ACR and PM Contact Sheet...

Forum,
I used Nikon Capture NX2 to process my NEF Files.
After editing the NEF in Nikon Capture NX2 in PM the NEF Thumbs (Contact Sheet) represented the edited NEF.
With my new Nikon I have to switch to ACR.
After editing the NEF in ACR I do not see any changes in the PM preview.
What am I doing wrong - which settings (ACR/PM) do I miss to get the in ACR edited NEF displayed correctly in PM Contact Sheet?

Nothing I guess, apart from switching to Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)...

- Most cameras create and embed a couple of preview images in their raw file.

- Photo Mechanic (PM) shows those preview images.

- Capture NX2 (NX2) replaces embedded preview images in the .NEF with the edited variant

- PM shows embedded previews made by NX2

- ACR does not change the NEF, not even embedded previews. Nor does Adobe Lightroom (LR) or Nikon's Capture NX-D

- PM still shows the embedded previews, meaning the original previews from the camera

- ACR and LR can update previews in DNG-files.

Thanks - that´s what I suspected.....
Unfortunately NX2 does not work with D810....
Do you know if DxO or and other Converter replace the embedded preview image?
Not sure if I will go with DNG - but I believe that is another discussion......

To my knowledge no other raw converter updates the preview of raw files either.

I was in the same boat as you and have switched over to DNG completely for quite a while now and I'm very happy with that.  I wrote a blog on that at the time you might still find interesting and relevant.

Tip: if you ever want to switch over to Capture One, make sure you retain a copy of the original nef file somewhere. At least the current status with Capture One is that they produce slightly better results from nef files than from dng files. But I would actually always recommend you keep a pure original as ultimate backup anyway
