Errors during copy from camera card to USB external drive

Hi, when attempting to copy or ingest a group of JPEG+NEF files from CF and SD cards to external USB3 hard drives connected to my iMac, I'm getting partial or total failure to copy, with the Photo Mechanic error message : There were error(s) during the copy/move operation. This happens both using the iMac's internal SD card reader and an external Kingston USB3 card reader.

My system: iMac i7 3.5 GHz late 2013, OS High Sierra 10.13.6, 16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3

Also, Photo Mechanic v5 build 19631 is taking 20-30 seconds to launch.

Any suggestions?
