Maximum Catalog Sze in Photo Mechanic +
« on: April 15, 2022, 12:40:24 PM »
Hi, I'm thinking about to move from my abandoned Media Pro catalogs to Photo Mechanic +
Culling and annotation works fine in PM+, but I miss a lot Digital Asset Management features from Media Pro…

I used to split my catalogs in Aperture, Lightroom and Capture One by year, but got them all together in one master catalog in Media Pro to search and browse. In more than 20 years event photography I have more than 1 Million photos and need to organise them in a Digital Asset Management system.

Is Photo Mechanic able to manage this without the spinning rainbow ball of death (Mac)?

What is the maximum catalog size?

There is no maximum catalog size.  Our test catalog has one million images in it.  A number of users have a single catalog with more than one million images in it.  I think the highest I have heard is 1.6 million.  No complaints about speed from the user.

I just scanned one folder of more than 100.000 photos over night. I has taken 10 hours, to scan them and process 1600px previews and ended up with ca. 34GB proxy previews and a 2.2GB database file. I guess i will need a 2TB SSD only for my PM+ database…

Can I re-process the scanned photos afterwards to get a smaller previews / proxy size, without to re-index all the other meta data?

Sounds like it would be around 360GB total, nowhere near 1/2TB, so why would you need to dedicate an entire 2TB SSD?

Yes, or alternatively, you can store your proxies on a separate drive and keep only the database file on your SSD.
