SSD or 7500rpm HD for PM+
« on: July 14, 2022, 12:36:31 PM »

I'm migrating to PM+ on my new Dell 8950.  At present, PM+ is running with defaults so its data structures are on the C drive along with Win 11 Pro, the photo images are on a network NAS drive.  My C drive is a 1TB SSD and I have a 1TB 7500rpm D drive.

From a longevity point of view, is the SSD or the HD the better choice for the PM+ database?  TIA

Best Regards,

Searching and indexing of the catalog will see the best performance from being on the fastest drive possible: an SSD. If space is a concern, the proxy files that Photo Mechanic produces for the catalog can be stored in a different, potentially slower location. SSDs won't suffer the mechanical failures that an HDD might, but can certainly fail in other ways. The best way to ensure you don't lose your data is to perform regular backups, but the only true data loss that would occur if the drive storing your catalog were to fail would be Collections that you create in the catalog, all changes to the metadata of individual images are written to where the source file is stored.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the prompt reply!

At this point, PM+ on the C: drive is using about 44 GB most of which are the proxies.  When I'm done migrating I suspect the size will be closer to 80-100 GB but with 1 TB that shouldn't be an issue; Win 11 Pro seems to be 100-110 GB.

That said, how would you change the location of the proxies?  Could they be moved, or would you have to reinstall and start over?  TIA

Best Regards

Sorry, should have included that information.

First, in Catalog Preferences, you would set the new location: https://docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48001156772-catalog-preferences

Then, in Catalog Management, for each catalog that would like to move the proxies for, you should change the Proxy Storage option: https://docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48001179060-catalog-management

Lastly, in case there's a question about what proxies are used for, I recently wrote this post and plan to add the information to the appropriate place in the support documentation: http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=13594.msg74421#msg74421
