Catalog Sync – updating metadata very slow
« on: September 08, 2022, 07:36:39 AM »
Updating metadata using Catalog Sync is very slow here; 100 images takes about a minute (screen recording).

Is this to be expected?

(MacBook Pro M1 Max, 64 GB; macOS 12.5; Photo Mechanic Plus 6.0, build 6496; image/xmp files stored on an external hard drive connected by USB-C.)

There are too many variables involved to say what is expected. If the drive that it's on is not fast, or the Sync is not the only thing utilizing the drive's bandwidth, the operation will slow down. A Full Sync needs to open each file in the catalog to check if its metadata has been updated from what the catalog has indexed, its generally only necessary if you are performing a lot of metadata edits of catalogued files outside of Photo Mechanic.

Thanks for your reply.

I've just synced metadata in Capture One for all files, which is why they're all being updated by Photo Mechanic when syncing the catalog. PM is the only application using the hard drive, so there shouldn't be anything slowing down the process bandwidth-wise.
