cropped enlarged view
« on: September 12, 2022, 12:58:39 PM »
I have Photo Mechanic Version 6.0 and use it mostly for a quick look at my images to delete the bad stuff before I add it to my LightRoom library. I just noticed that when I double click a thumbnail to enlarge it, that the image is cropped. It is not the full edge to edge of my actual file when I open it in PS. How do I see the whole image? Do I have something set incorrectly? Thank you for any direction here.

What kind of file are you working with and what camera produced them? If you have screenshots to show how they appear to be cropped in, that would certainly be helpful as well.

I am shooting with a Canon R5 so they are CR3 RAW files. One image is the photo double clicked in Photo Mech, and the other shot is the same image opened in PS. The PM view does not go to the edge of the file.

With the zoom off it fills the screen with the same cropped image. @ 1/4 zoom it does not fill the screen.....but still does not show the whole image. I can do another screen shot with the zoom off if you would like.

This is the same image/file, opened in Photoshop showing the whole image.

This is the same image/file, opened in Photoshop showing the whole image.

If the embedded preview differs significantly from the developed RAW file, then that's what you're going to get.

ah-ha! Thank you so much for this explanation....ok....so it is Canon's embedded preview that is not showing the whole file!? That explains it. Have you heard of this from other Canon users?

Bob reported..

Quote
It seems the RAW data has a larger pixel dim vs the jpeg preview. I converted a 6R CR3 file into a DNG and now the preview is 5568 px wide vs 5472 px for the jpeg preview

So, it does appear that some Canon cameras are saving marginally smaller (pixel-wise) Jpg previews. Whether or not there is a camera setting related to lens correction that causes this, I can't say.  I downloaded a sample R5 .cr3 from DPReview and did not see the difference. (And it might be worth checking if you have the latest Canon firmware... )

...One image is the photo double clicked in Photo Mech, and the other shot is the same image opened in PS.

Appears to be different image files (..._039 and ..._040).

Can camera post processing wizardry, such as lens correction, explain raw/preview size differences?

I would not have thought so prior to this, but I know lens distortion correction can sometimes require a bit of cropping, so I just threw it out there.
