Why is ingesting in PM+ so unreliable?
« on: November 11, 2024, 01:06:12 PM »
No matter how hard I try, 9 times out of 10 when I'm ingesting photos into PM+ I get duplicates from photos that have already been ingested. Yes, I have "Incremental Ingest: copy new photos only" checked in the ingest settings.

This means I have to manually check to see which photos I've already ingested and then manually select the new photos to ingest as to avoid duplicates. So basically, I have to manually do what the checkbox says it's doing.

Am I missing something? Does anyone else deal with this?

If something deletes the .pmingest.dat file from your card, then everything will be downloaded again.  If the Incremental Ingest data that PM maintains on your computer is lost, then everything will be downloaded again.

There is an issue with Incremental Ingest that causes files to be downloaded again when the system time changes (due to Daylight Savings Time/Standard Time transitions).

Are you ever changing your time zones due to travel?

Thanks for the prompt response, Kirk.

I don't know what would delete the ingest file from the card. Is there a way for me to check the ingest data on my computer?

Yes I travel periodically for shoots and change the time zone in the camera.

Right now ingesting photos into PM takes me so long, I just wish I could plug in the card and hit ingest and have the confidence that PM is doing the thing it says it is without me having to babysit. Do you think this is ever possible with PM while being a traveling photographer?

Yes, though it would probably be easier for you to contact support directly than for me to explain the process here.  You can contact our support folks at:

By email: support@camerabits.com

By phone: +1 503.547.2888

Hours: Mon-Fri, 9:00am-5:00pm [PST/PDT]

Yes I travel periodically for shoots and change the time zone in the camera.

Do you also change the time zone on the computer you're Ingesting the photos?

Right now ingesting photos into PM takes me so long, I just wish I could plug in the card and hit ingest and have the confidence that PM is doing the thing it says it is without me having to babysit. Do you think this is ever possible with PM while being a traveling photographer?

I would really like to fix this.  What version of Photo Mechanic Plus are you using?

I believe the time zone changes automatically on my computer, unless you mean I have to doing something time zone-wise in PM? Also, there are times where I take photos in another time zone but don't ingest them until I'm in my home time zone.

I'm using PM 6+ I can call support tomorrow. Thanks.
