Image Pixelated When Zoomed
« on: October 24, 2025, 05:20:06 PM »
Everyone has insisted I use PM to cull my photos. That would be great if I could check for focus as I'm able to in LRC. Unfortunately 100% in PM is not the same as 100% in LRC. If I try to zoom so I can actually check focus, the image becomes pixelated (see attached). I'm clearly doing something wrong? I also attached a screenshot of my system info if that matters. I see great benefits to PM so I really want to figure this out. Thanks!

I only see the screenshot of your system's details.  Please post the image that illustrates the problem with zooming.

My apologies, clearly been awhile since I've posted on a BBS.

It is likely that your Sony camera is only putting a medium resolution JPEG in the ARW files it is producing.  PM does not do RAW rendering by default.

Which version of Photo Mechanic are you using?  With that information I can give you specific details on how to improve the zoomed-in previews.

OK, good.  Open the Photo Mechanic Settings dialog (Photo Mechanic->Settings...).  Then navigate to the "Render Cache" page using the popup menu in the upper left area of the Settings dialog.

You have two choices for RAW rendering.  If you use Adobe products to adjust your RAW photos, I recommend downloading and installing the free Adobe DNG Converter from https://adobe.com/ and then choosing the Adobe DNG Converter as your renderer.  Otherwise you can choose the Apple ImageIO engine as your RAW renderer.

For the When rendering images popup menu, you have three choices:

  • Always render RAW photos
  • Only render RAW photos on demand
  • Render RAW when embedded preview is small

The third option will automatically take care of your zooming resolution issue.  However, if you find that you're not zooming into all of your previews, the second option (on demand) may make more sense.  You can press the key assigned to the "Toggle Render Quality" command (Q is the default keyboard assignment) and the image will be rendered as RAW.  You can do this in the Contact Sheet (thumbnail grid view) and in the Preview window.

Thank you, Kirk!!!

I just turn on RAW rendering in settings and it was already set to "Render RAW when embedded preview is small" and that seems to have fixed it. Now I just need to learn how to do Code Replacement and Hot Codes using BBEdit.
