Using "?" key in a shortcut
« on: December 18, 2025, 08:00:08 PM »
I am trying to create a shortcut for the old refresh shortcut key of SHIFT+? but when I try to create that shortcut, I get SHIFT+/ in the shortcut field.  Is this by design or an oversight.  So much muscle memory on SHIFT+? for a refresh that I can't remember F5 when working fast.

Thanks

-Mike

I am trying to create a shortcut for the old refresh shortcut key of SHIFT+?

In Photo Mechanic 5, refresh did not have a shortcut. In Photo Mechanic 6 the shortcut was F5, and then the same was true in the new version until we introduced customizable shortcuts. So refresh doesn't ever appear to have been tied to Shift+?

That said, on my keyboard (a US English, QWERTY keyboard), ? and / are the same key. I need to press Shift and the key that has "?" and "/" printed on it to get a question mark, so other than the shortcut not displaying a "?" character, I'm not really clear what problem this is causing you; holding shift and pressing the key with "?" and "/" on it should do what you are needing it to.

Perhaps you are actually wanting the Rescan function, which has always been tied to the / key since Photo Mechanic 5 (and possibly earlier)?

Interesting.  So I guess I was using an undocumented feature.

Will you be able to allow a SHIFT+? shortcut to be assigned to the view/refresh option?

Current behavior is that when pressing SHIFT+? the custom shortcut for View/Refresh results in the shortcut being set to SHIFT+/, not SHIFT+? and actually, the shortcut key becomes "/" without the SHIFT.   Pressing SHIFT+/ does nothing but pressing "/" gets a refresh of the contact sheet.

Thanks

Again, I'm pretty sure you want Rescan, not Refresh. Try setting Rescan to Shift+? (or Shift+/, as it were) and tell me if the combination of keys that you are trying to set now performs the function that you are wanting it to.

I have reread the definitions of "refresh" and "rescan" in the help file.  I definitely want "refresh".

I am unable to set the shortcut key to "?".  Using SHIFT + the ?/ key results in "SHIFT+/" being displayed as the shortcut, but then only "/" works as the shortcut.  Pressing SHIFT+? doesn't actually load the question mark as the shortcut key.  Can you try setting the shortcut to "?" to see if you get the "?" rather than the "/" as the shortcut on your end to see if you can do that?

I am on Windows 11.

Thanks
