Check Boxes at bottom of the Contact Sheet

There are two check boxes and what looks like a disabled input field to the left of the left check box.  What is the purpose of these check boxes?  I click them and nothing happens.  They are not documented in the manual so I assume they are a new feature, either not mentioned in subsequent release notes or I missed it on a quick look...

I believe the "input box" is a progress bar.

The checkboxes toggle the selection by ranking and color, respectively.

To see how this works, open a contact sheet and rank some photos 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.  Next, click on the 0* (zero star), 1*, 2*, etc. and see how the display changes.  Now, click on the checkbox to the left of the stars and see the change.

I played with the filters and the checkbox switches individually but never together.
