Feature request for combined jpg+raw view
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:19:30 AM »
Hi, I have been evaluating PM demo if it would suit my needs for
workflow with Nikon Capture NX. I have found this app to be superb.
However, I noticed an annoyance when editing raw and having
shot in jpg+raw mode which I normally do.

I tried here a user-story kind of approach for feature requests. Maybe some of
this is already possible and/or asked before.

br, Timo
------
As a user of Photo Mechanic I would like to

- Use raw file embedded preview when using combined jpg+raw in the
preview or thumbnail view. Because this would enable me to see the edits
done by the raw editor, e.g. edits by Nikon capture NX which embeds a new edited
preview pic in to the raw file. Now I can only see the original version
(i.e. jpg) or the actual raw by toggling the Q key, but I have no way of seeing the edited
version without turning the jpg+raw view off. It is hard to keep track what has been edited if
I do not see the edited picture. In practice I suppose this would mean a
new selection in the preferences -> raw -> for RAW+JPEG -> use embedded JPEG Preview.

and to further enhance this I would like to

- have an option to see all the different (i.e. both jpg and raw)
preview pictures in the preview view when the combined jpg+raw view is
on. I would like to have this to be toggle switch in the preview view,
so that when I would push the toggle button it would scroll/toggle
between jpg and embedded raw preview.
- See some indication that jpg and raw files are potentially different
(i.e. raw file or jpg has been edited) when using the combined jpg+raw
preview and in the thumbnail view.
- have an option not to display jpg and raw as one picture in the
preview or in the thumbnail view when they are potentially different.
Others not potentially different would be still shown as one.

Last two are derivate features from the new Nikon ViewNX, which is otherwise
not up to the job for me.

I am using Mac OS 10.4.9 at the moment.

Before using PM, I mostly shot NEF+JPG, but now I just shoot NEF and I avoid many the problems you described.  When I need a jpg, I just extract them.  This works great except for my D2h -- its unedited embedded jpgs are low res, so here I still shoot NEF+JPG.

That is a very nice feature, and I can certainly manage it this way. Thanks for pointing it out. Extracting is fast too. Seems that NX actually embeds better quality jpg than what I can even shoot with my camera.

The embedded jpg is in the NEF straight out of the camera.  Once you edit the NEF with NX, the embedded jpg is replaced with a high quality full size (if it isn't full size already) jpg.  This usually increases the size of the NEF a fair amount.  Unfortunately, with NX you cannot instruct it to save a good quality jpg, but you can save some disk space by adding a Size / Resolution edit step and specify a smaller size.
