Is it possible to use PM codes with Microsoft office? any tips on possible applications &  how to get me started would be good.

I think he wants to create code replacement files with Microsoft Word or Excel.

I do not recommend that.  You just need a simple text editor that can write text in the UTF-8 format.  On Windows, Notepad2.exe is an excellent, free solution:

On Mac OS X, TextWrangler2 is an excellent, free solution:

http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/

Just make sure you use at least one tab character between your code and your replacement.  And when you save the text file, save it in the UTF-8 format.

Then load it into Photo Mechanic.

I know of no other software that offers a code replacement feature.
I think it is unique to Photo Mechanic and was a user-generated feature request about two years ago.

I wondered the same thing and heard of some text editor offering to set up a list for its usual "Find and replace" operation what gives you a similar result like the code replacement. As I remember Edit Pad Pro has such a feature but I hadn't had the time to check it (but it would be deffinitely useful for my work as well).
