Removing default rating filtering

I must have done something inadvertently because now when I open a directory in the contact sheet the "0 *" (zero star) filter in the status bar is greyed out.  Each new directory I go to I have to click on it to reset it.

Is there a way to reset this globally and how did I grey it out to begin with?

You probably clicked it off by accident.  You can turn it on one last time and then right-click on the control and make the current state the Default.
