PM Slow to open folders
« on: February 05, 2009, 09:39:49 PM »
I am running 2 different machines
1- Mac Pro 8 core, 10 GB ram, OS-10.5.6, PM 4.5.4
2- Macbook Pro core 2 duo, 4 GB ram, OS- 10.5.6, PM 4.5.4

When I open a folder PM is slow to open it, it doesn't matter if there are 50 or 1500 photos in there.

And forget it if I try to open more than one folder.

I thought it was my machine, so I took it to Apple and they checked and PM is sucking up all the RAM and still looking for more on both machines.

Any thoughts, anything I can change here?

Thanks Larz

What are your Memory Cache settings in Photo Mechanic on each system?  Open up the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog, then click on the Caching tab.  I don't ever recommend more than 1024 MB for the Memory Cache, nor more than 2048 for the Disk Cache.

Also, are you making Photo Mechanic render RAW files using ImageIO?  If so, that is incredibly slow.

Kirk,

They are set to the defaults.

Disk cache 512 MB  reserve at least 100 MB on the disk cache volume
Memory cache size 128 MB

This is happening with JPEGS.

What should I set them to? The numbers you posted? Will that make it faster?

Kirk,

4.6 was sluggish on my pc (XP Pro SP3 - 2.5bg RAM) also and I hadn't gotten around to checking preferences yet. I changed mine to your max mentioned - to
Disk cache 2048 MB  reserve at least 2048 MB on the disk cache volume
Memory cache size 1024 MB
From the defaults. It made a BIG difference!
Would there be any reason not to do this (other then tieing up resources from other software)
- I would recommend that in this day of high end starter PC's you up the defaults a bit.

How's 4.6.1 coming??
Thanks
Joe

That's really odd.  Photo Mechanic absolutely smokes on my systems with JPEGs on Mac OS X with the default settings.  I suggest you contact our support folks at 503-547-2888 for some direct troubleshooting.

Photo Mechanic memory usage should not exceed the Memory Cache size by more than 100MB or so.

You certainly have enough RAM on both of your systems to use the settings I described.

There are many systems that come with only 1 GB of RAM at this time.
On your system (described above) I would set the Memory Cache somewhere in the 512 to 768 MB range.

We're still working on 4.6.0 as it hasn't been officially released yet in its final form.
