IPTC / XMP Settings for OS X Finder
« on: May 29, 2009, 02:05:10 PM »

OS X 10.5.7;  PM 4.6.1

Hi All,

I was trying to use the Search feature within Photo Mechanic, and I noticed that some of my CR2 files were not being found in the search, while other CR2’s were.

So I tried to do the same search in the OS X Finder, (looking for a word within an image file) and Finder did not find those images either.

I’ve made several changes to PM’s IPTC / XMP settings over time, and I cannot remember which were the settings that work with finder and which ones do not work. What I am certain of, is that under my current PM ingest settings, the OS X finder cannot find words in the caption of raw CR2 files.

Screen grab of my current settings below.

So my 2 questions:

1. What can I change in PM settings and ingest settings so the OS X finder can search within my CR2 captions?

2. How would you recommend I go about fixing the odd- 500 Gigs of CR2 files that already live in my archive so that the operating system can see their captions?

Thanks for any help,
Nati

What application do you use to render your RAW files?  I need to know that first in order to make a suggestion.

Kirk,

If you mean do I have the Enable Raw Rendering via Apple ImageIO, then yes, I have it checked.
For my workflow, I ingest with PM, send the image to Lightroom to process the image.

OK, just turn on embedding of IPTC for your TIFF-based RAW files.  Do not embed IPTC4XMP into your TIFF-based RAW files or you will have a lot of problems when using Lightroom.

As for updating numerous files, use the "Update IPTC/XMP..." tool on the Tools menu.

Kirk-could you include a screen capture containing the recommended settings for Lightroom?

Sure.  See below.  Only the highlighted areas need to be set the way they're set in the images.  The rest can vary according to your needs.  I didn't show a picture of the General tab and the Contact Sheet labels and colors, but you need to make the colors and labels match the colors and labels you're using in Lightroom (the extra colors PM has to offer over Lightroom's list can vary however you like, but using them will have less compatible results.)
