PhotoMechanic slow to respond when switching apps in Mac OS

PhotoMechanic is slow to respond when switching applications in MAC OS. For example, I might be working on a PM contact sheet, then switch to Safari or other program and when I return to PM, I get the rainbow wheel and it takes from 20secs to 1 minute to release control back to PM. I've tried emptying the cache but saw no difference. I can't think of anything that might have changed the applications' behavior as it has always been very fast. The files accessed are on an external usb 2.0 drive. When using activity monitor, it reports a "hang" for the PM process every time I switch applications.

PM Version : 4.6.1
RAM : 4 GB

Is your USB hard drive going into sleep mode perhaps?

No, I've checked that. It used to work fine, for no apparent reason it started this behaviour.

Are you willing to run a logging version to find out where the time is being spent?

I experience the same slow application switching problem with a logging version of PM you sent me to track a sorting issue earlier.

It seems me the logging version has less trouble with slowing the system but I plan a heavy test during the weekend.
