PM Color Class and Tags in Aperture?
« on: October 14, 2009, 01:35:37 AM »
Quick question: is it possible to see Photo Mechanic's tags and color classes in Aperture? I use PM to make my selects and it would be really helpful if my hierarchy of tags and color classes would carry over into Aperture so I can better manage my archive.

Tech specs: I am using Photo Mechanic 4.6.1 on OS 10.6.1 on a 15 inch MacBook Pro unibody.

Unfortunately, no.  Aperture does not import data from XMP (which is where everyone [Photo Mechanic, Bridge, Lightroom, etc.] stores that sort of information).

Sorry.  Please make a request with Apple.  This inability is entirely under their control.

Would Lightroom have this same limitation?

No.  It works fine.  Adobe created the XMP standard and all of their products work with it.

Ah. Thank you. It looks like I may be switching to Lighroom.

Apple more or less redesigned Aperture and added some new functionalities as well (like color classes as I remember were missing until now).

Is there maybe any change in this regard Aperture 3 supporting tagging, color class and rating info to be stored in XMP?
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

I didn't see anything in their list of over 200 new features that indicated Aperture would import information from XMP.  As far as I can tell Aperture 3.0 still only exports XMP data.

From: http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/

"Import XMP Sidecar Data
While importing images, Aperture now imports metadata from XMP sidecar files located with them."

Although it seems to import only XMP 1.0 information, which I think leaves out ratings and labels...

Actually doing a test of Aperture 3 for a few days now it still seems to be slow on my MacBook Pro with the same tasks that LightRoom does fast and controls seem me not that productive as I would like them to have....especially those related to the metadata handling (PM is invincible on this field). I will stay with LightRoom.

But if changes in Aperture 3 make it possible it can be good to have a better compatibility with LR as well.
