New to the Forums and to PM--questions about ingest..
« on: June 29, 2009, 01:54:40 PM »
I'm new to PM and the Forums. I'm following Peter Krogh's DAM book. My question is, does PM allow for Convert RAW to DNG upon ingest? I can't seem to find that option. I know there is a Tool to Convert to DNG once ingested, but is that available upon ingest? If not, it should be. A very simple dialog box to point to Adobe's DNG Converter would make that easy. Thanks for any reply.

No, there is no such option.  We may add it in the future.

Convert to DNG During Ingest
« Reply #2 on: April 14, 2010, 06:22:59 PM »
A crucial feature, I think — something ImageIngestor supports nicely — is to allow one to convert RAW to DNG *during* the ingest, rather than afterwards. It avoids the step of doing so either with Adobe's DNG converter or using the Convert to DNG action in the Tools menu.

I'm never really interested in the RAW file anyway. II will toss it in a backup-like folder that I'll have hang around until the month's shooting has passed — just in case of an accident — and then I'll delete it. But, I never mess with RAW files.

No — the DNG files become my canonical source for work. The RAW files (NEF for the most part, in my case) are what my camera gives me and I let ImageIngestor read them in, put them in a directory on my computer and then convert them at ingest time into DNG files. Then I just work with the DNG's. This is a basic description of my workflow, inspired from the DAM Book with my own twinkling of alterations and additions (mostly mirroring my photo library two places in *the cloud.)
