Mutilingual IPTC
« on: September 24, 2010, 07:24:03 AM »
We are a team of photographers using IPTC info on different platforms and different machines. We understand that presets for a given language already exist and language is not an issue as we work in both French and English.

The question is more about a bilingual showing of IPTC info. In other words, if we distribute our images to a country like Canada where there are two official languages, how will different photodesks across the country be able to read IPTC in their own language.

Just to make myself clear as it seems to be a misunderstood issue, our photographer would write English and French captions so no translation is necessary, but what does he do with them since there is only one caption field? What does AP or Reuters do for Japan captions? All English and then the local editor translates the captions?

Not sure what the standard practice is around the world for such an issue.

Thanks for the help.

One would have to put two IPTC records into the photo, one in English and one in French, or have a single IPTC record with duplicate fields.  To my knowledge there is no software that supports either of these options, including Photo Mechanic.

For Fotofinder- and Apis-Platforms in Germany we use (on a Mac)  the following " | " . So it's like: German Text | English Text. I don't know how to get | on windows, on Mac it's alt+7. Beside, it's a lot of writing, multilingual IPTCs.
