captioning is lost after going from PC to Mac and then back to PC

I first used PM 5 to store captions, then I had to move the contact sheet to the MAC to some editing of the photos. I took the contact sheet back to the PC to do an upload to a file server and then I found out that all of the captioning fields were blank. How come? I had to start all over again and this time I just did everything on the PC and all of the captions stayed.
Is there a problem going back and forth with the platforms?

Hi Stacy!
Have you been captioning the images on the memory card or on the hard disk?

After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

In addition to Sven's question, are your IPTC/XMP settings on both systems the same? If shooting raw, are you perhaps not embedding the info in the files but just create .xmp files on the Mac, which you simply forgot to include when transferring?
