PM very slow

My system is very slow and it is getting frustrating. I continuously have to "Force Quit", even just changing something in Preferences give me a hassle.

My system specs are:

MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz i7
8Gb Ram
Free HD space = 388Gb
OS X 10.7.2
PM 4.6.8

BTW: My wife use a iMac and have similar problem.

Not sure if it is because we have to many photos. Part reason we moved from Aperture to PM and a recommendation from one of our friends.
