Larry,
What kind of drive is it? You shouldn't have to turn off your computer when an application hangs. Just press Command-Option-Escape and terminate the faulty application. If the entire computer locks up then it is likely a driver issue. How old is the drive?

It is a brand new Lacie 3T, The Command-Option-Escape wouldn't work. Its working OK now and it only happened a couple of times so it is hard to find the fault.
thanks, larry
