PM5, video and MBP Graphics processor
« on: August 03, 2012, 03:19:38 PM »
Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 13100 (1a2f5e4)
OSX 10.7.4
MacBook Pro mid-2010

I spend a lot of time using my Mac while on the battery so I use gfxCardStatus 2.2.1 to monitor the graphics processor's usage since it is a major power consumer.

Normally the graphics processor is not on so I get great PM performance without draining my battery.  However, when I open the preview window with a .mov file, even before I play the video (great new feature), the graphics processor is switched on and stays on until I quite PM.  I can close the preview window, look at contact sheets, open the Preview with a .nef or .jpg, it doesn't matter, the graphics processor stays on.

gfxCardStatus lists the PID and Activity Monitor shows that PID to be PM5.

Russ,

We use QuickTime X to play videos in PM 5.  It is likely making the change for its needs.  Closing the Preview window doesn't cause the window to be destroyed, just hidden.

I don't know that even if we were to destroy the Preview window when it closes whether your video would go back to its low-consumption mode.
