Trimming IPTC field white space

Just wondering whether any new tools have been added to trim the white space from IPTC fields since my last thread on this topic:

Some of my field values have a space and CF/LF at the end.  Not sure why, really.  These values are added via CR.  Only seems to affect multiline fields (e.g. Headline).  Single line fields like Category are fine -- no trailing blank nor CF/LF.

Anyway, the past advice has been to use something like {headline:0,-2} to correct it, which will of course assuming each field needs to be trimmed by 2 characters.  I am hoping there is something a little more flexible?

No, no new capabilities have been added to variables substring extraction.
