When NX2 is set as default editor in my LR5 preferences any open image in PM which I select the external editor for will open NX2 with that image also open in NX2.

If I set LR5 as the default the LR program opens but does not present the selected image for editing and so I have to find the image again in LR as another operation ?
I appreciate this may be nothing to do with PM but can anyone help please?

I think this is not a Photo Mechanic problem.  What OS are you running?  It would be helpful to know what OS you're running since different OSes have different ways of dealing with file associations.

I don't think it is a PM problem either Kirk, tried the Nikonians will try LR forums next.
I am running Widows 8.1 64 bit.
