Sorting on file name

Is there a way to sort filenames that have the name "Jeff" from the name "Ed" in them - if so, I can't see to find it..

It would help to have some examples of the filenames, but sorting by filename sorts all of the filenames alphabetically and if your filenames start with Jeff and Ed then the Ed pictures should sort to the top.

Filenames could be

IG-0010_Jeff.jpg or IP_0010_Ed.jpg.

Sequence was SesssionMat(pinkorgreen)_filenumber_shooter.

I'd like to sort on "shooter" in this case.

Where is this "shooter" stored?  In an IPTC field?  The {user} variable?

If it is in a place that a variable would work then you could change the sort popup menu to Custom and then enter something like:

Primary sort: {user}
Secondary sort: {filename}

And then all of the photos shot by Ed would sort before those shot by Jeff.

Actually, it's stored no where but in the filename itself - not as a variable.

How did you get it into the filenames?  Manually?  Does each of your cameras have an "owner" setting?  If so, you can use the {owner} or {user} variable.

That was done during an ingest to uniquely ID the files. Have never checked the "owner" variable...

I tried using serial number but it fragments the sorts since at different times we both might have two bodies going during the same session.

For now...why don't you just SEARCH for the Jeff (or Ed) files, then use an empty IPTC field so that you can use any naming convention you'd like. 

I would search them, then use Catagory and Supp Cat 1, 2, and 3 for a) shooters name b) hold the ORIGINAL FILENAME {filename} or {filenamebase} or {frame4}  and c) session d) mat

Does this make sense?
