You can't use those email systems since they don't support MAPI.  You need an email client that can be controlled via MAPI.

Thanks Kirk.
I do find it strange though that in this day and age Photo Mechanic cannot support Gmail or Yahoo.

Thanks Kirk.

It does, you just need a mail application (like thunderbird) that is supported and have that configured to read your gmail or yahoo mail. Remember that PM is not a mail reader and need some “agent” to perform that task. That agent then has to offer functionality that allows other applications to talk to it. That is what MAPI is for, and Gmail does not support that (or probably any other way of communicating).

Note that I'm assuming here that you mean the gmail desktop application, as I think it is quite obvious that PM would never be able to handle the webmail version...

Ok. I've tried thunderbird and when I put in my email address and password it comes back that either name or password is wrong but they are not wrong. Please can someone tell me some alternative as I can't seem to find one. Thanks for any help before I pull my remaining hair out.

It is likely that the password is correct but you are using the wrong authentication method. For gmail access here are the server settings I use in TBird:
Server Name: imap.googlemail.com
Port: 993
User Name: xxx@gmail.com
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password

For your outgoing mail, configure the smtp server as follows:
Server Name: smtp.googlemail.com
Port: 465
User Name: xxx@gmail.com
Authentication method: Normal password
Connection security: SSL/TLS

Hope this helps,
Hayo

Still no joy. Those are exactly the settings I'm using and it still says 'Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?'

There are two little programms that enable MAPI capability for gmail under Windows.
1) Affixa http://www.affixa.com/. This works fine.
2) mapi4webmail http://www.joonis.de/en/software/mapi4webmail. Needs some tweeking. The limitation is that it only creates a draft that has to be send manually.
