No, they are not deleted when the cache is emptied.

IMHO, I think you should change your workflow. If you are traveling for more than a month, you should take an external HD with you to back up your files. As Goos says, you should always format the disc in camera after ingest.

I think about it - an external disc is not the problem.
I must go in touch with delete the SD-Card after ingesting... (I had an feeling problem :-( - it's not real, it's in my mind ;-) )
Yes, I reformat the card's ever in camera :-)
