Sony RX10-2 .mp4 file support?
« on: August 29, 2015, 09:50:25 AM »
Hello-
I've done an ingest on a combination of stills and movie (.mp4) files from a Sony RX10-2 and the .mp4 files seem to be giving Photo Mechanic some trouble. The files show up in Finder just fine, also play back with the Quicktime player and in preview mode. However, in a contact sheet the .mp4 files show up with their name in red and an empty thumbnail, and when trying to do file rename operations that include the .mp4 files the operation fails on the .mp4 files. I've got other video files in the same contact sheet (different camera, .mov format) that Photo Mechanic handles just fine, so the problem seems limited to these particular files. The .mp4 files are 4K if that makes a difference, I haven't had a chance to try other encoding options on the camera and see if those work. Any thoughts as to what might be going on? Thanks!

System info:
Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 16438 (e61be25)
OS X Yosemite, 10.10.5 (14F27)

Could you post a very short sample video here?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Thanks for the reply - a short clip showing the problem I'm having should be attached.

Any updates on this? If it is of use here's a short excerpt from the support info log file that seems relevant. This was from when I was doing the ingest on the files and repeats for all of the .mp4 files that Photo Mechanic is having problems with.

When PM calls into the QuickTime SDK with your sample file to get information about the movie, it returns error -2041:

error -2041 invalidSampleDescription

For some reason the SDK version of QuickTime does not work with the "Sample Description" on your MP4 file.

I have no workaround for you at this time.

Thanks for the update - it'll be awkward but I guess I'll just have to do renaming on the video files by hand. As a feature suggestion it'd make things a lot easier in this instance for me if I could tell Photo Mechanic to ignore the errors for these files and at least let the file rename go through so I can keep the .mp4 files named in sequence with the photos on ingest. I can live without the previews/thumbnails for these movie files, but the file naming is pretty central to my workflow.
