LR won't read PM XMP output and vice-versa
« on: June 02, 2019, 05:39:07 PM »
Hello! I am using Photo Mechanic on a trial basis to speed up workflow. So far I have been thoroughly enjoying the speed and efficiency from the program. I do have a problem that is a deal-breaker for me if I can’’t solve it: PM does not communicate any metadata changes with LR (and vice-versa).

I am using PM 6 and LR 6 on a Mac running OS X 10.14.3 (Mojave).

I began by using the navigator to select the disk, created a metadata template and applied it to all photos, then imported my LR hierarchical keywords template and applied keywords to the photos. Finally I ingested the photos into a folder and imported the photos from the folder into LR using the default import dialogue (which did not apply any metadata).

LR was able to read the EXIF data (I had artist name and copyright info in files from camera) and nothing else. No keywords, color code, or star ratings. Looking at the XMP file, PM successfully wrote the info, but this was not picked up by LR. Selected “Read Metadata from Files” in LR which did not import any of the data. Tried to add color code, keywords, and star rating from LR and refresh in PM, no dice. Tried ingesting files into PM and applying IPTC template on ingest, adding metadata later, no success.

Checked every forum entry I could find to make sure that I had the correct settings, changed defaults to Lightroom and Adobe compatibility settings, no change. Made sure that the Separator box was checked, no change.

The obvious variable that I have not altered is upgrading to LR CC. However, I don’t want to do that.  Is there anything else that I can try to solve the problem? I will post the screenshots of LR and PM momentarily. Here is one of the XMP files after PM modification:

OK, sorry for the delay in replying, just got back on.

Kevin, Thanks for your reply. I had performed the checks to make sure "Adobe Products" was checked. However, I found out the most important piece was checking "Allow RAW Files to be Modified." This simple maneuver allowed LR to read the data.

Still no reciprocity (modification in LR with saving of metadata does not change PM's interpretation of the file. I am selecting Tools/Update IPTC/XMP to try to refresh-- maybe this is incorrect? LR is set to save changes to XMP, so in theory this should work.

Please post a screenshot of your IPTC/XMP settings in Photo Mechanic's Preferences dialog.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

Thanks,
