Trouble after "Scan to Catalog"
« on: February 15, 2022, 05:26:56 AM »
Hi,

Mac m1x, Monterey 12.1, Photo Mechanic Plus Version 6.0, build 6245 (14de08a)

I had been using "Scan to Catalog" for some folders on my drive. 2011, 2012, 2013, etc.  All was working great with the catalog  - I could search, keywords were there.

I scanned the 2016 folder from the same drive (which I've checked, it is just photos and videos, has no errors and is working fine) and Photo Mechanic has had something bad happen.

In the Task bar it says "Catalog Metadata Updates - Updating 1 catalog, 382 batches remaining" but this seems to be hung. It never changes.

When I click on the Catalog icon in the upper left hand corner It brings up the Search bar and other tabs, but I cannot click on any of them or enter anything into the search window.

When I click on "Catalog" from the top menu bar and select any of the options such as 'Management' or 'Catalog Status' nothing happens. They are not grayed out, but clicking on them just doesn't work.

When I click on the "Ingest" icon in the upper left hand corner I can double click a folder and all the images appear, so that part of the program seems to be working ok.

When I try and quit Photo Mechanic I get an error that says "The Catalog system is taking awhile to stop. Continue waiting?" Yes just makes it wait more, No eventually exit out of the program.

I've tried re-booting, but the same thing happens. It seems that my catalog got botched on the last folder ingest.

Any ideas to maybe cancel that latest Task or otherwise fix things?

thanks,

Steve,

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic Plus log.  In Photo Mechanic Plus go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Thank you, Steve.

The majority of the errors in the log are due to a catalog being unable to be opened.  What can you tell me about:

"ThunderBlade/Catalogs/Photo Mechanic/Master Catalog" ?

Has it been deleted?  Moved or renamed?  Or is the "ThunderBlade" drive not mounted (been disconnected)?

Hi,

The "Thunderblade" is an external drive made by OWC. It is plugged in and it's monitor shows that all is well. In Finder it seems fine.

The catalog is there and hasn't been touched.

Is there a way I could just "reset" this import and try again?

Steve,

Thanks for the information and the screenshot.  Was Photo Mechanic Plus open at the time of the screenshot?

No it was not.

I was reading some other support threads. I had tried clicking and right-clicking the "Catalog Metadata Updates" thing that was stuck, but I didn't know you could double click it.

On doing that I got the options to stop the ingest process. I stopped both of those, turned everything off and on and then it worked, ingesting the 2016 catalog without a hiccup.

So, not sure what it was, but seems fixed now. Thanks for the quick replies and if I could offer anything else to help with diagnosis please let me know.

OK, so the reason I asked was because I saw additional files (.shm and .wal) that are only there when a catalog is open by some process which could have been Photo Mechanic Plus (a pm-task) or something else.  It may have been the case that when Photo Mechanic Plus did not shut down cleanly that one of these processes was still active and keeping the catalog open.
