Strange character written by Photo Mechanic
« on: July 13, 2022, 08:55:39 AM »
Hi,

We are very often in Germany and Austria for our holidays and make a lot of photo's there. With the help of a loggerfile we do a reverse geocode. We put the geo-information also in the keywords (as structured).

We have e.g. a streetname: Straße

It is stored by PhotoMechanic in different tags. In the tag IPTC-Keywords is written: Stra§e (so with a paragraph-sign instead of a ringel-s). In other tags it is written correctly.

Perhaps a bug?

Can you post a sample image that exhibits the problem?

Sure! Made a fresh photo and *ONLY* processed it with PhotoMechanic (I'm also using Capture One Pro and iMatch).

Thanks in advance!

The § character is appearing in IPTC metadata because the IPTC metadata was not written as Unicode.

To resolve this, first navigate to Photo Mechanic's Preferences-->IPTC/XMP, then select the "Write IPTC as Unicode" checkbox.

Open the folder of affected images as a contact sheet, then select all of the images.

With all of the images selected, from the top menu, navigate to Tools-->Update IPTC/XMP.

Select the "Update" button in the Update IPTC/XMP window that appears.

This will update the IPTC metadata to be written as Unicode.

Note: XMP metadata is always written as UTF-8/Unicode.
