Ingest issues with my Z9
« on: September 01, 2023, 06:06:30 PM »
This just started happening on August 19th, and I've no idea what's going on.

When it goes to ingest a file, the dialog box shows the following error:
Error copying: E:\DCIM\195NCZ_9\JS9_5535.NEF to C:\photography\2023-09-01 UCLA vs Someone Test\JS9_5535.NEF
Warning: Finished copying from volume "E:\", but there were errors.

The log file shows the following:

This will happen for every file, and the contact sheet never opens. The files ARE copied from the card, and I can manually select the the folder to open the contact sheet. From there, I can tag and cull, but I cannot move the files into a new subdirectory, nor can I upload them to Dropbox etc. Saving files does work.

This will happen with a single file. I have done a full format of the card, and it still has issues. Copying copying the file to my local hard drive before ingesting doesn't fix it.

The card works perfectly fine in my Z8, with the same lens and same ingest settings.

Given that the only difference between the two should be the GPS data, I first tried to disable looking up the information during ingest, then I turned it off on the Z9 completely-- still happening.

The camera is on firmware 4.01, but it was happening with 4.00 as well.  More specifically, it works with files I took on August 11, but started failing on the 19th. I don't recall making any setting changes that might affect this, but that certainly seems to be what's going on. Even if it is a setting, I would think that Photo Mechanic would handle it more gracefully.

Photo Mechanic is Photo Mechanic Plus Version 6.0, build 6784 (409cf99).

Debug log and a file that's failing is attached. Any help is greatly appreciated; I really don't want to wipe the camera back to factory right before three big shoots, but I also don't want to be manually dealing with file management from three big shoots.

EDIT: Bit the bullet and reset the settings, and it's ingesting again. Reloading the saved settings breaks it. So it's absolutely some setting on the camera, but I have no idea what it might be.

Jim,

It's odd that the log you sent has the source file as:

C:\jim\JS9_5537.NEF

and not:

E:\DCIM\195NCZ_9\JS9_5537.NEF

...like your post said.  Do you know why that is?

This is just a guess: something about the permissions on the card is not allowing you to copy the files from the card with Photo Mechanic Plus.

I tried to ingest from the card, copied the screen grab for the post, then accidentally deleted the log file, so I recreated the error from the local disk. But I get the error with both.

And to be clear, Photo Mechanic Plus IS copying the file, it's just throwing an error, then not letting me move it.

Here's where things get interesting-- when I download that file from here, it ingests, which backs up the permissions theory.

But the card works fine with my Z8, and it works fine with the Z9 after I wipe all the settings. It's only after I start reapplying my settings that it fails.

I manually reset everything, just to make sure that I wasn't copying back some setting, and the error came back.

Just to be crystal-clear: I run "reset settings" on the Z9, and it works immediately. I manually re-add my settings (ie, NOT loading from the save file on the card), and it stops working.

I haven't had time to go through setting-by-setting, checking after every step that it still works, but given that the file worked when I downloaded it from here, I guess that's going to be the next step in the process.

I'm also still seeing issues inside of Photo Mechanic trying to move these files.

With Windows, I changed the permissions on all the files and subfolders so that Full control was granted to Everyone, Authenticated Users, and Users. This is actually more permissions than the files from the Z8 had.

But when I try to execute the move, the first file copies, then this error shows up in the log:

[Mon Sep-04-2023 17:36:50.698][0000d9d4][6898564] CopyPhotosThread.cpp:461 Unexpected exception in CopyPhotosThread::operator()

So, some resolution here.

In windows, I killed the DCIM folder on the memory card. I shot a bunch of stuff on the Z8 and ingested it- no issued.

Put the card into the Z9, shot some stuff, and now it ingested correctly.

I've no idea how the DCIM permissions got reset by changing some settings, but that appears to be the issue.
