Shielding variable?

I must be getting old...the shield feature on the cropping tool in Preview mode does not shield "enough" for me to properly assess my crops anymore. Of course, it's a relative matter depending on image specifics, but lately, I've often wanted to darken the shielded image to almost black.  Can this be done currently, or the feature considered?  Thanks,

I suppose there could be a darken percentage in the Preview preferences.  Currently there is no way to adjust its darkening level.
