Open existing catalogue on second computer
« on: Today at 06:39:47 AM »
Hi,
My PhotoMechanic catalogue is on a remote solid state drive (SSD) which is normally connected to a desktop computer.  I also have an older laptop and would like to access the catalogue when I am away from home.  Both computers are running versions of Mac OS.

How do I tell PhotoMechanic on my laptop to use the catalogue stored on the connected SSD drive?

As a side note I used the rename catalogue function from the laptop on an experimental test catalogue that I had switched between computers and was stored on the same SSD.  The Catalogue name was unchanged but the SSD drive had been renamed on the desktop computer before being connected to the laptop.  It seems that the rename operation does work but requires that PhotoMechanic is quit and restarted

An update:
I have managed to open the catalogue and view it on PhotoMechanic on the laptop.  It required "reintegration".  Unfortunately it shows all the images in the catalogue as not connected whereas images taken in 2023 and  2024 are on the same SSD as the catalogue.  I have attempted to use the locate folder command but it throws an error telling me that the folder paths are the same.  I am confused.

My expectation is that the catalogue contains all the data necessary to locate and manage my images yet  using a catalogue folder on a second computer disproves my expectation as it appears to take a number of operations to prepare the catalogue for use.  I suspect that I have taken some incorrect actions so please let me know how to move smoothly between computers i.e. two different copies of PhotoMechanic each on a different computer accessing the same catalogue stored on an SSD which is moved between the two computers when I travel.

Thanks in anticipation.

Moved the Thread.

Reading earlier posts I found the following from April this year:

"Sorry, I meant to reply to this the other day, but we do not support sharing a single catalog between two computers at this time."

As someone who use to write database applications I wonder why and how the catalogue is coupled with a single instance of PhotoMechanic Plus.

Also, as I doubt that I am the first user wishing to edit/manage/curate their image collection while away from home/office how do others work while "on the road"?

Curious,
