Convert flat keywords to structured
« on: March 29, 2025, 11:10:18 AM »
Using newest PM+ (Apple Silicon), I have an enormous flat list of keywords that I now want to make “structured”. I know how to create from scratch, but want to use existing flat keywords and “nest” into broad category keywords…AND have the new structure applied to the photos in the library (approximately 50k).

I have been searching forum and general internet, but maybe am not using the right search terminology. I can easily manipulate the stationery text file to create the structure, but assume that would not affect existing photos…but maybe I’m wrong.

I will experiment, but would appreciate any advice on how to do this as I assume it has been asked before and I just can’t find it…..thanks….gary

Gary,

You can make the keywords file in to a Structured Keywords file, but that won't automatically cause the flat keywords in your existing images to become hierarchical.  You'd have to manually apply them again.

Thanks Kirk. As I’ve been pondering this, I think I may have confused the issue somewhat. I am experimenting with some test photos to see what that would really look like. In reality, all I want are the flat keywords in each file and I am now thinking that the structured keyword thing is merely a convenience in adding original metadata. So instead of having to add Denver, Colorado, US, North America as separate things, the structured keyword list would (hopefully) add all of them (flat) by just entering “Denver”.

The reason for the quandary is that while I originally used PM+ 6, I lost faith in an Apple (Universal) app after about 4 to 5 years since the Apple chips entered the market. I was concerned that all would be lost when Apple discontinues Rosetta 2. So I started using Photo Supreme, which basically forces a structure of keywords (or label) nested under categories. It goes to the issue previously discussed where Photo Supreme apparently writes metadata like Lightroom and Exiftool shows BOTH a “dc:keywords” (flat list) AND an “xmp:lr” which PM reads and adds to the flat list. I wish it didn’t do that, but apparently “it is what it is”. So now that I am back with the Universal app (thanks to the recently announced upgrade opportunity), I followed the “Find and Replace” technique to flatten the list which make PM display normal keywords. At this point, I am trying to decide if these two DAMS can co-exist as there are strengths in each…but I doubt it if there is no way to turn off the reading of that “xmp:lr” field……thanks…gary
