Category and Keywords

I am a newbie to IPTC and PhotoMechanic. Can someone explain to me the typical conventions used in keywords and categories. For example, what would classify as a category vs. a keyword? Also, are keywords and categories created in PM able to read in Lightroom?

Categories and Keywords should both be able to be recognized in Lightroom.  Be sure to instruct PM to create XMP sidecar files for your RAW files, and embed XMP into your JPEGs (or TIFF/DNG/PSD files.)
