Photo Mechanic V Nikon Transfer
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:36:47 AM »
Hi my question relates to the transfer end of my digital workflow please advice.

I started out using Nikon Transfer which I like the options available and was straight forward to work out and implement. I have found at times the download process will completely freeze and am still working on resolving the problem but I like the thought that I am using Nikons own software and all the data is being decoded ready for NX2,

Ok to part two after a bit of trial and error I have moved away from NX View to clunky, and have been trying out Photo Mechanic which is a world away smooth fast reliable plus any changes I make NX2 reads. I am still in the Demo stage and are on the point of paying my money and making the change.

1. Does Photo Mechanic on transfer (digest) decode all the info held in the raw files ready for NX2. I probably do not understand the process enough but have read how Nikon keeps there code to themselves.

2. I have been reading Photo Mechanics PDF manual but do not fully understand how to get the best out of "Digest" for example when I download from my card reader as simple  as I want the photos to be placed in a new folder dated like so 2008_12_08 so far I have only been able to create folders dated like so 20081208 any help would be much appreciated  ;D

The Photo Mechanic Ingest feature downloads all files properly (it is basically a file copier unless you embed IPTC metadata or rename files.)

Use this as your Folder Name in Ingest:

{year4}_{month0}_{day0}

Many thanks for the reply the "{year4}_{month0}_{day0}" worked great. One question tho is the supplied suggestion in the pdf manual if so can u point me to the page within the manual which explains this?
I purchased PM today and am very happy with it.

Your specific example is not in the manual.  The manual does list all of the available variables and does discuss the Ingest feature as well.  The Index and Table of Contents are both hyper-linked so you can just click on the links to read about the various features in Photo Mechanic 4.5.x.
