How do I export from RAW files to full-size JPGs??
« on: April 06, 2009, 12:59:32 PM »
Hi,

I've had PM for about 9 months and use it for sorting/classifying images.

I've never used it to export full-size JPG images, but from time to time I would like to.

But I can't see how to do this??!!?

Can someone show me please?

Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon,

Do you mean to extract JPEGS from within RAW files?

Yes, that's right.

Currently I do this in Photoshop, but sometimes I'd like to go straight to the full-size JPG from PM.

I can only seem to export smaller sizes though...

What kind of camera? I believe the PM extract feature just pulls out whatever your camera or other processing software embedded there. With Nikon D40 NEFS I get a very nice full resolution JPEG out of the camera, but it is small in filesize (i.e. "low quality" or "basic", about 800KB), after opening the RAW file in NX2 the embedded JPEG gets a major upgrade to highest possible quality and is about 4MB.

So the size of the file and therefor quality may change, but it is always the same resilution, i.e., 3000 x 2000 = 6MP.

Well, if I save as JPEG in Photoshop, my JPEG image ends up as a 4368 x 2912 pixel image.

With PM, it's just 2496 x 1664 pixels.

Well, the 5D is a 12.8 megapixel camera, so the Photoshop size is correct. Could it be that they embed a smaller JPEG due to the enormous size of this sensor? What you need to do is find out what resolution JPEG canon embeds in its RAW files.

A quick look on the Canon website shows the following excerpt for the 5D, where it is apparent that the resolution you are seeing in PM extracts is exactly the "small" option. Maybe the RAW files embed "small" only. Could there be an option to ask the camera to embed "large"?

File Size

(1) Large/Fine: Approx. 4.6MB (4,368 x 2,912) (2) Large/Normal 2.3MB (4,368 x 2,912) (3) Medium/Fine: Approx. 2.7MB (3,168 x 2,112) (4) Medium/Normal: Approx. 1.4MB (3,168 x 2,112) (5) Small/Fine: Approx. 2.0MB (2,496 x 1,664) (6) Small/Normal: Approx. 1.0MB (2,496 x 1,664) (7) RAW: Approx. 12.9MB (4,368 x 2,912)
