Pixelated images
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:39:01 PM »
I just downloaded PM 4.6.1 and noticed that when scrolling through images, they (or parts of them) appear pixelated, then after a few seconds snap back into focus. I’ve never experienced this in previous versions of PM and just wondering what might be causing it . . . and if anybody else is experiencing the same thing.

Mac OS X 10.4.11
PM 4.6.1
PS3

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Is this in the Contact Sheet?  Or the Preview window?

Are you zooming in and out of images?

What are your Caching settings?  Please post a screen shot of the Caching tab of the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.

This is happening in the preview window.

I had tried zooming in and out of the previews, but the pixelation occurred when the images were the same size and I was scrolling from image to image.

Cache settings are attached (hopefully).

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Hmm, all versions of PM I've used so far have exhibited pixelated previews/zooms every now and then so I guess you've been lucky so far  ;D

The pixelation always goes away after giving PM time to render/load the complete image (or images). Unless the way the cache and prefetching works has changed in 4.6.1 (which I don't recall reading in the release notes), I reckon you are now seeing this phenomena for the first time because you are browsing more quickly and/or have a larger contact sheet.

Cheers

Hayo is right.  As a suggestion I would set your Memory Cache size to 128 or up to 512 depending on how much RAM you have in your system.  This will let PM keep more images in memory and will speed up the reviewing of previously cached images.
