We have Image Capture app's settings set to open PhotoMechanic when we insert a card.

This also means that when we connect our iPhone that Image Capture also tells PM to open as Image Capture recognises the iPhone as a storage device.

There are two questions here. Is there anyway of preventing this while still auto opening PM on insertion of cards, as disabling auto open in Image Capture means that nothing will open PM. (You could always install your own background daemon to watch for things mounting. so you have more control over when PM starts)

Secondly there are some apps out there notably http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/ that see the iPhone as a kind of storage device for downloading images from it. Maybe you could decipher the protocol and allow ingest from iPhone...  ;)

For now though we would love to have PM auto open but not for the iPhone.. Personally id like a daemon so we could potentially have a check box list of what we want to open what app.. it would be useful for more than just PM.. it could remember devices / volumes added, and display them in a dialog with a choose which app to open popup. kinda handy and would solve the iphone problem too..

PS.. could you put an option in PM to choose only to show cards (sort of) in the ingest dialog. im worried one day i will click ingest on the 200gb external drive that is showing up in it.

Kind Regards

Photo Mechanic is being launched by Image Capture.  Photo Mechanic cannot tell what is going on until it is fully launched and is not queried by the process that Image Capture uses to determine when an application should be launched.

It is Apple's place to write that daemon application (or just add the feature to Image Capture itself), not ours.

To solve your last issue, you can create a folder on the root of any drive that you never want to Ingest from with name:

PMIngestIgnore

I think this preference pane might solve your problem... I wrote a brief post about it.
It allows you to set an action for each device, rather than just one global action.
