color code slow down
« on: June 19, 2010, 07:48:30 AM »
Lately it seems the pm is slow when I start to color code images.  I ingest 200-300 raw/jpeg images then go about color coding selects, rejects etc.  I am waiting for images to appear full screen then waiting for the color to appear.
Mac book pro, Snow leopard , PM 464

Seems to have got worse over the last couple of months.  Did the last upgrade suck up more RAM? ( I have4 gigs)

Any ideas?

Waiting for the color to appear?  After you have changed it?  Or just when advancing from image to image?

Both waiting for the next image and waiting for the color to appear.  3 or 4 times longer than it was 6 months ago

I cant remember if the slow down and upgrade were at the same time - it's possible

Chris,

We have one other customer reporting that tagging/color classing/rating is slow on their machines.  Both machines are running Snow Leopard.  I worked with him and gave him logging versions of Photo Mechanic.  The results so far appear to be OS related.  Simple reads of data are about ten times slower on his two systems than even our slowest system running across a local area network.  Sometimes the disk I/O is fast and sometimes it is very slow.

Not sure what to do about it.  Do you have the recent 10.6.4 update?

The problem has nothing to do with apps being a memory hog or not.  Your hard drive is not transferring data quickly.  Hard drive is not equal to memory.

I don't know why your system and the other customer's two systems have slow disk I/O.  It's really nearly impossible for an application developer to tell why your hardware would be slow.

I am doing a complete reinstall/reformat of my mac, then I'll do a fresh download of PM - I'll let you know what happens.

Just to add, I've found a similar issue on my Windows system here.
I having just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, I notice PM took a few seconds to color classing/rate a photo..
A few minutes to do a few photos (50-100).. eekk.  also found any tagging I did was not saved .. hmm

I found the fix or issue was the security permissions on the files and folders.
See when I upgraded I formatted and installed Win 7 on my system drive.
I have my photos on another drive in the system. I never touched during the install of Windows 7

I as soon and I changed the security permissions, removing the "unknown user"(S-1-5-21-....) and making my new user owner.
PM started working nice and quick. also saved the color classing/rate etc... :)

Maybe this is the same for Mac.. ??  don't remember all my unix* permissions. :|

rgrds,
Mike

I had 4.6.1 handy so I installed that - No issues - Nice and fast just as I remember. I do 4.6.4 next.
