Error: Unable to save IPTC info

I'm working with a contact sheet of images from 2005, and when I "edit caption" to change the IPTC data, the edits don't stick when I hit
"save"; I get the above error message without any more details or indication of what the problem is. Advice?

I need more information from you:

What OS are you running?
What version of Photo Mechanic are you using?
What kind of files are you captioning?  (examples: JPEG, TIFF, NEF, CRW, CR2, etc.)

Just to follow up: Hannah sent me a photo which I was able to caption just fine with both the current Mac OS X and Windows XP versions of Photo Mechanic.

It turns out that she has read-only permission on the files locally on her system.  Thus, Photo Mechanic cannot update the files.
