IPTC Mapping to Lightroom 4 and Windows Photo Viewer
« on: August 24, 2012, 05:25:32 AM »
I am currently in evaluation mode and nearly ready to purchase PM. I was testing the IPTC data transfer to the way some of my clients use my photos since they have not yet moved to PM.

I enter two fields in PM: Headline and Caption
My files are jpg+raw (Canon 7D).

In LightRoom 4 (and 3) the Headline text appears as Caption and the Title field is blank. The PM caption data appears lost.

In Windows 7 Photo Viewer when selecting Properties during image view I see similar results. The PM fields do not map as I would expect. The PM Heading data moves to a caption-like field and the PM caption data appears lost. (It's possible I mixed this up a little, but it's easy to test -- I just don't have the computer with me today to do so.)

When I installed I pretty much took the default settings in this area; I don't recall making any changes. I had evaluated 4.x just before version 5. and saw the same thing so I hesitated to buy.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

By the way, I downloaded a great manual when evaluating version 4. Do you have a manual for version 5? I am old-school and actually read the manuals and you guys do a great job!

Thanks, Roger

It's possible that there is something set incorrectly in the IPTC/XMP settings.  Can you post a screenshot of them?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

No, we do not yet have a manual for PM 5.

OK. Now I sit at the computer loaded with PM and can provide more detail with screen captures.

Attached file descriptions:

IPTC_XMP_Settings.jpg = PM5  IPTC/XMP Settings. I believe these to be default settings when installing the software.

PM_IPTC.jpg = Data entered first in PM5. Next images show results in Windows 7 Photo Viewer and LR4.

PhotoViewer_IPTC.jpg = data as shown in Windows 7 Photo Viewer. Notice how the PM5 caption moves to the Title field and the Title (Headline) is lost.

LR4_IPTC.jpg = Lightroom 4 capture. Here, the caption moves over correctly but the title (headline) from PM5  is lost. Earlier, when evaluating PM 4.x, I noticed the same thing with Lightroom 3.  Please note: I made the IPTC changes in PM5 BEFORE I selected and imported the photo into Lightroom 4. I know LR doesn't re-sync that data unless told to do so.

I know all of my clients will have Windows Photo Viewer so this has been my default method to convey Title and Description for each image. I use Lightroom in my workflow and would very much like the Title & Descriptions to carry over from PM which I would use as my first-step in a new workflow.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Roger

That's more of a function of a poor implementation of the metadata standards on Microsoft's part.  For some reason they took the Caption/Description field and show its contents with the label 'Title' in front of it.  The metadata hasn't spontaneously changed after PM created it.

Do you have LR4 set to display the Headline field?  PM writes the XMP for that field as "Headline" in the Photoshop namespace just like Photoshop does.

I don't see in your screen shot of LR that it is showing a field named Headline that is blank.

Windows Photo Viewer may be common, but it is a poor example of a metadata-savvy application.  There are other free applications like IrfanView that are much better.
