Black crush in PM 5.
« on: January 20, 2013, 10:14:59 AM »
Hello,

I've just installed PM 5 and immediately noticed strange black crush when color management is enabled. Please look at below screenshot to see what I'm writing about. I have properly calibrated and profiled monitor and all applications I use displays my photos properly. On screenshot you can see comparison between PM and IrfanView. Capture NX2, ViewNX 2, Photoshop, and some other apps with color management display this photo identically but only PM5 have all dark shadows crushed to near black. Have some of you noticed this behavior? Maybe someone knows how to fix it? I found PM very handy and incredibly fast but due this bug I have to use ViewNX for viewing my photos .

P.S. I'm using PM 5.0 build 13444 on Windows7 x64.

What does it look like if you disable color management?  Do your images have embedded profiles in them?  If not, what have you set as your default profile for previews?  See the Color Management tab in the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.

When I disable color management in PM tonality is much better but of course colors are totally off - see below screenshot. All my images have embedded profiles and it's MelissaRGB D65 with G2.2 TRC (it's my working space in CNX2 and PS). Default profile is set to MelissaRGB D65, but when I'm changing it to another profile it have no effect as all my images are properly tagged.

Can you post your monitor's profile and your MelissaRGB profiles?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your files.

Thanks,

Do you by chance have multiple monitors?

Yes. I have two monitors and included profile is for primary. Secondary is not calibrated nor profiled as it's used for tool palettes. Both screenshots are of course from primary.

I wonder if perhaps PM is getting confused by your second uncalibrated monitor.  As a test, can you disable it and see if it makes any difference?

Thanks,

I am sorry to intrude, but why would you want to use Melissa outside Lightroom?
AFAIK Melissa is for use inside LR and normally you would embed another color space when exporting.
I can appreciate using it in PS as working space, but then again not when exporting.

Kirk,

Thanks for suggestion - I'll try it tomorrow.

Steffen,

To be honest it's not even original Melissa. MelissaRGB is basically ProPhotoRGB with TRC taken from sRGB and D50 white point. My Melissa have D65 white point and true G2.2 TRC. Of course for exporting I'm using appropriate color spaces and Melissa is used as a working space in NX2 and PS. Formerly I've been using ProPhoto but it had this strange left shifted histogram and color values. All in all for web export I'm using sRGB, for printing lab profile and for monitor viewing Melissa.

Just checked it. Disabling second display didn't helped at all.
Please have a look at below screenshots. They shows black clipping with and without color management for same photo. It's very strange as both profiles - monitor and embedded in file - have identical TRC's, so only visible change should be colors but not tonality.
