Strange behaviour with psd files.

Hi Kirk,

Trying PM 5 out and had a bit of a strange happening... Editing psd files, no .psd on file as it messes up my file names when export in PM. Use PM to browse files, select and open in photoshop. All works file, as per last 4+ years etc. I notice that some of the colour preview are changing when I save them in photoshop, all set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, so I open prefs in PM and Colour Management, select sRGB IEC61966-2.1 instead of default and select colour manage in thumb and preview, then ok to prefs. I then go back to PM and find that when I select files to open in photoshop, photoshop says it does not recognise files! Look at files in finder and icon is now white on some of the files, and PM now has a ? when selecting preview.

Anyway I'm now gone back to old Colour Management settings and upgraded to version just released. Files still show with ? on preview. I tried putting .psd at end of file and now it opens file in PM and photoshop. It would seem that PM is writing something into the file that makes it not readable.

Let me know if you want me to forward a file that is acting funny.

I would expect PM5 to only write to your files if you made some sort of edit to them (tagging, rating, color classing, cropping, adding IPTC).  Changing what your default color profile for images should not cause PM to write to your files.

And I don't understand what you mean by "PM now has a ? when selecting preview."  What is a "?" ?   Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

No, just like I said in my previous reply, setting a specific profile for images that have no profile information should not cause PM to change your files.  Only the edits I described earlier and some of the items in the Tools menu should modify your files but each of them takes a specific action on your part.  You indicated no actions other than setting the default profile and telling PM to launch your photos to an external editor like Photoshop.  Neither of those operations should cause your images to be changed by PM.

Does PM not write sidecar files or whatever its called? I had to change the way it used to write xml files as it was giving a problem with 5D MK III files as per previous topic I posted. Since I can't that no xml files appear next to files processed through PM. Sorry on iphone so being a bit vague.

XMP Sidecar files are only ever generated for RAW files and Movie files and only when you tell PM to use then and then make soft edits.  PSD files have metadata embedded into them like JPEGs, TIFFs, and DNGs.

Can you post a before and after version of one of your PSD files?  If PM is indeed corrupting images I would like to get to the bottom of it ASAP.
