Keywords & IPTC
« on: June 19, 2013, 03:11:13 AM »
Im not a very experienced user so bear with me.
I tried to add my keywords & IPTC data to some new images and eventually realized that the two panels were blank ie all my save data has cleared, I was trying to add nothing.
Have not had this before, bit inconvenient but is there basic reason that would cause so that I don't do it again?
All my stored images are OK the data is still there.
Thank you
regards

ps Further to my earlier post I seem to have other odd quirks since going to V5. Could you possibly point me at the latest "Suggested" XMP IPTC Settings for NX2 & Windows?
Thanks

Dave,

You're probably entering your text for a single image into the IPTC Stationery Pad and not the IPTC Info dialog.  The IPTC Stationery Pad is used to apply metadata in bulk to a selection of images.  The IPTC Info dialog is used to enter captions for individual images and is also used to view the IPTC data from an individual image.  To get to the IPTC Info dialog for a specific image, click on the 'i' button that appears over the image when you put your mouse cursor over it.

If you're not having this issue, perhaps you're editing directly on your card?  By default, PM5 does not allow editing directly on camera cards.  The setting can be changed in the Files section of the Preferences dialog.

As for Capture NX2 settings, please see the new PM5 online manual:

Thanks for your time and the link, another development which occurred at the time - I am finding XMP files alongside my NEF when I look at  them in Windows Photo Viewer, never seen them before, can they be deleted and should they be there if I have NX2?

If you're using Capture NX2 then you don't want XMP sidecar files.  Did you change your settings in PM5 to the settings in the manual?  If so, then you shouldn't be having PM5 generate any XMP sidecar files anymore.

But before you delete those XMP sidecar files, use the IPTC Stationery Pad to clear some unused field (this will cause the remaining XMP to be embedded into your NEFs, which is what Capture NX2 likes.)  Then you can delete those XMP sidecar files safely.

Dave,

If you use any Adobe program beside NX2 you will see the XMP coming back. Adobe can (and does) read XMP/IPTX embeded in the NEF, but writes out XMP exclusively. Quite a nuisance...
