Lag when switching applications
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:07:55 AM »
There was a previous post on this topic here, but it's quite a few years old: http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=2022.0

Anyway, I was curious if there has been any thought to adding a feature to PM so that it does not rescan all folders/files automatically when switching between applications? Maybe when an automatic scan is disabled in preferences, the user could be prompted if they want to rescan the file system when they switch back to PM? That way the user will be reminded that file changes haven't come over to PM, but won't have to wait for PM to rescan.

We often have folders with several thousand RAW images and sometimes it takes a few minutes (yes minutes, depending on the number of images) when switching back to PM from another application. We typically work on a network drive, but even when working on a local HD it can take quite a long time for so many images.... We probably use PM more than any other program we have, so fixing this single issue would make a huge difference for us and I suspect several other users.

On the Mac version is a setting in the Contact-Sheet preferences named "Automatically rescan when folder content change".
I am not sure if this is also present in the Win version.

After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

yes, I confirm this behavior
I use to browse with PM, edit with CNX2, then return to PM to tag the edited photo, or select another one.
Sometimes I have to browse many sub-directories at once (for example to filter or find specific photos and edit some of them), and this is frustating as I have to wait, even just to move to the next photo to be edited or tagged.
But for me the solution is not obvious for PM developers

No, it isn't present on the Windows version.  But it doesn't control whether or not a rescan is done when switching from another application back into Photo Mechanic.  There is currently no setting that would allow the avoidance of a rescan when resuming Photo Mechanic.
