Renaming resolution - bug or feature?

When Preferences>Files>Renaming resolution is set to "Always append a digit" then the digit will be appended on copy and move even when no renaming is activated.

Is this a feature? I'd consider it a bug. My expectation is that it would do what it's called: Renaming resolution. I can see no reason for appending a digit during simple move/copy actions. If I want that that I'll rename. There's no conflict to resolve.




I DO appreciate though that PM offers the option of always appending a digit or two. This keeps file names from having different lengths when a DATE-TIME naming scheme is applied.


One little suggestion:
Wouldn't it be nice if Renaming resolution was slightly more modular?
Append: letter/digit
Mode: always/when needed
Zero buffering for digits: 1/2/3 ...

What is the version of PM you are using?
Running on Windows or Mac OS?

I am using the latest version (build 15077) on Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) and I do not have the issue(s) you mention here.

I run PM 5 R15077 on OS X 10.9
See the attached screenshot for the copy operation that leads to appending a digit while "Always append a digit" is set in Preferences. Note that no renaming is activated.

Kirk, with "when needed" this would result in filenames of different lengths which I want to avoid.
With a renaming scheme like {year2}{month0}{day0}_{time sort} the only partly appended digit will even lead to losing the capture time order when Browser sorting is set to "Filename".

Luiz, let me ask you this: do you also like that a digit will be appended on copy and move even when no renaming is activated and PM is set to "Always append a digit"?

I just can see no sense in that behavior. I want this to happen when I rename, not when I simply move or copy and there is no conflict.

And obviously it depends on how you rename - because it can influence filename sort. See my screenshots.
