Is it possible to have the menu not darkened for Yosemite? (see pic)

That's a bug in the new OS.  PM is certainly not making the alpha value for text anything but fully opaque.

No.  Apple will have to fix their bugs.  Why are you using a beta OS to do your work?  Aren't you worried about bugs in the OS that could cause data loss?
